Clean Diesel Truck Video Training

Welcome to this online course. In this series of videos, we will help take the mystery out of clean diesel engines so you can better understand your truck and maximize its potential.

Newer trucks have technologies to prevent diesel pollution. Diesel exhaust pollution impacts everyone – especially those who live, work and go to school near major roadways. Pollution from old diesel trucks can cause serious health problems such as asthma, heart disease, cancer and birth defects.

Training Summary

This video course will show you how to care for your clean diesel truck, avoid expensive repairs, and save money on fuel. The course is divided into seven videos.

1.  Understanding Your Clean Diesel Truck

Key Points:

Understanding how your truck works can:

  • Help end frustration
  • Save money

2.  Clean Diesel Trucks Are Different

Key Points:

Clean diesel trucks work differently than older trucks

  1. Idling damages the engine
  2. Dashboard lights can’t be ignored
  3. Leaks must be fixed immediately
  4. Ideal RPM is different
  5. Maintenance is more important

3.  Your Truck’s Pollution Control Equipment

Key Points:

DPF System vs. DEF System

DPF System

  • In 2007 and newer engines
  • Collects soot and ash
  • Must be manually cleaned to remove ash

DEF System

  • In 2010 and newer engines
  • Changes the exhaust to be less harmful
  • Requires DEF fluid

4.  Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Regens

Key Points:

  1. Hot exhaust helps to clean your truck’s DPF
  2. If your DPF light is on, you must take action
    • Drive engine hard to create an Active Regen (optional)
    • If that doesn’t work, start a Parked Regen
    • If that doesn’t work, take your truck in to be serviced

5.  How Your Engine Impacts The DPF

Key Points:

  1. Maintain your whole engine regularly to avoid DPF problems
  2. If you have frequent problems with your DPF, check the rest of your engine for other issues

6.  Money-Saving Maintenance

Key Points:

  1. Check your engine everyday for leaks & fluid use
  2. Make sure you know:
    • Your truck’s routine maintenance schedule
    • When your truck needs a clean diesel mechanic
  3. Fix any problems immediately!

7.  DPF Cleanings & Replacements

Key Points:

DPF Cleanings and Replacements

Have a mechanic clean or replace DPF at least once a year

Make sure a mechanic:

  • Checks the DOC and SCR for clogging
  • Runs a Parked Regen
  • Fills out DPF Cleaning History Sheet (for DPF Cleanings only)

Reconditioned & Aftermarket DPFs:

  • Are cheaper
  • May or may not work properly
